Publishing for Visibility and Success: Publication Strategies in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Publish or perish – publishing is essential for achieving academic visibility and building a successful research career. But which publication format is the right choice for your project? When is it worth publishing a journal article, a book chapter or a monograph? And how can publication decisions be integrated strategically into your doctoral career?
Drawing on her many years of experience as an academic publisher, Barbara Budrich offers this two-part workshop to provide a practical introduction to scholarly publishing in the humanities and social sciences. Participants will develop an individual publication strategy tailored to their research project, disciplinary context and career stage.
Part 1: Choosing the Right Publication Format
Participants will explore suitable publication formats for their research, learn how to identify reputable journals and publishers, and gain insights into approaching editors and presenting publication projects effectively. The session also covers traditional and open-access publishing, copyright, publishing rights and research integrity.
Part 2: Developing a Strategic Publication Plan
Participants will develop a long-term publication strategy aligned with their doctoral project, disciplinary context and career goals, including strategies for cumulative dissertations and completing the PhD on schedule. The session also explores ways to increase academic visibility through international publishing opportunities and science communication formats such as blogs and audiovisual media.
Workshop aim
The aim of the workshop is to equip doctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences with the knowledge and practical skills to develop an effective publication strategy tailored to their research projects, disciplinary contexts, and career goals. It also aims to enhance their understanding of scholarly publishing and help them increase the visibility and impact of their research while ensuring successful and timely completion of their dissertations.
